US vs EU clothing sizes, explained

How European numeric sizing maps to US S/M/L, and why two brands using the same label can fit completely differently.

EU sizes are body measurements

European clothing sizes are based on the wearer's body — typically bust or chest in centimeters. US sizes are based on the garment and have drifted toward vanity sizing over the past four decades.

Translating S/M/L

A US Medium roughly equals an EU 40 in women's and EU 50 in men's. UK sizes typically sit two numbers above US for women's (US 8 ≈ UK 12).

The vanity sizing problem

A US 8 in 1990 is closer to a US 4 today. EU sizing has drifted much less, which is why European charts feel small to American shoppers.

Frequently asked questions

Why do European brands feel small?
European sizing is closer to actual body measurements and hasn't shifted with vanity sizing trends. Most US shoppers find they need to size up at least one notch in EU brands.
