Baby Clothing Sizes: Use Measurements, Not Age Alone
2 min read · Updated October 27, 2026
Age labels are a starting point for baby clothing. Use the retailer’s height and body-measurement chart for a more useful comparison.
Age labels are not growth guarantees
Babies of the same age can have different body lengths and proportions. A three-month label does not guarantee fit for every three-month-old. Where the retailer provides height or body measurements, use those rather than assuming the age label is a universal conversion.
Read the baby-specific chart
UNIQLO’s measurement guidance separates babies and kids from adult categories. Use the relevant product category and regional store. Check whether the chart describes the baby’s body or the finished garment, and follow the illustrated measuring method without pulling a stretch fabric taut.
Check practical space
Consider room for a diaper and comfortable movement, then assess neckline and opening design as well as length. More length does not always mean more usable body room. Follow the product’s intended fit, especially when an item has a close-fitting design or specific safety instructions.
Do not invent a country-to-age formula
Height-based labels can help compare products across borders, but retailers use different age bands and garment cuts. Our children’s tables are approximate orientation, not a substitute for a product chart. Recheck actual fit rather than buying solely by a predicted growth date.
Before you order
- Use the product’s baby chart rather than adult size letters.
- Measure or use recent relevant body measurements.
- Check height, body room and opening design.
- Follow the garment’s fit and care instructions.

Frequently asked questions
- Is 6M the same as 6–12 months?
- Not necessarily. Age ranges differ by retailer, so compare the published measurements.
- Should baby clothes always be bought much larger?
- No. Follow the intended fit and product-specific instructions; excess fabric is not automatically better.

Children’s Clothing: Height Labels vs Age Labels
Height labels and age labels answer different questions. Match your child’s measurements to the product chart rather than converting age by formula.
How to Read a Clothing Size Chart
Check the market, units and measurement type before choosing a clothing size. S, M and L are only labels for that particular chart.
