How to Measure Your Inseam for Trousers
2 min read · Updated October 27, 2026
Inseam measures the inside leg, not your height or the full trouser length. Use a pair with the right hem position as a reference.
Measure from crotch seam to hem
UNIQLO’s garment guide identifies inseam as the inside-leg distance from the crotch to the cuff. Lay trousers flat, align the leg naturally and follow the inside seam. Record the units and whether the hem has been altered.
Keep inseam separate from rise
The rise runs from the crotch area toward the waistband, while inseam runs down the leg. Two pairs can share an inseam and still sit differently at the waist. Overall trouser length is not an interchangeable substitute because measurement methods and waistband position matter.
Match the intended shoes and hem
A length that works for sneakers can look different with boots or heels. Compare the hem position you want while wearing the intended footwear. A cropped silhouette is not necessarily too short; read the product’s intended style and use a comparable garment.
Check alteration details before ordering
Some retailers offer fixed lengths or hemming options. Confirm whether alteration affects return eligibility and whether the listing describes pre- or post-alteration measurements. Do not rely solely on height recommendations; people of the same height can have different inside-leg proportions.
Before you order
- Pick trousers with the desired hem position.
- Measure crotch seam to hem along the inner leg.
- Compare product inseam in the same units.
- Check rise, footwear and alteration terms.

- Can height determine inseam?
- Only approximately. Measuring is more reliable than a height-based assumption.
