Measure a matching ring

Measure the internal diameter of a ring worn on the intended finger. Do not include the metal thickness. A caliper can give a more precise result than a coarse ruler, but the jeweler’s sizing convention still matters.

Circumference and diameter are related

Inner circumference equals diameter multiplied by pi. An 18.1 mm inner diameter gives about 56.9 mm circumference, not 56.25 mm. Rounded size labels are not always identical to precise geometry.

Paper is an estimate

A marked paper strip can estimate finger circumference, but pressure, angle and knuckle shape introduce error. A professional fitting or proper sizer is preferable for an expensive purchase.

Band width and resizing vary

Wide rings may feel different, but there is no universal extra half-size rule for every wide band. Ask the jeweler. Resize limits depend on metal, stones and design rather than a guaranteed number of sizes.
