Japan sizes

Mondopoint (shoes) · Numeric cm (clothing)

The most literal system in the world — shoe sizes are foot length in centimeters.

Shoe size

Foot length in cm (25.5, 26.0, 26.5)

Runs 1-2 letters smaller than US

Sizing chart lookup

Bust/waist/hip in cm

Japanese shoe sizing uses Mondopoint: the size number is the foot length in centimeters, in 0.5 cm increments. A JP 27.0 fits a 27 cm foot. This matches ISO 9407 exactly.

Japanese clothing sizing skews smaller than Western sizing at the same numeric label. A JP L is usually a US S or XS. Look for cm measurements or the international S/M/L/LL badge on the tag.

Common pitfalls

  • JP L ≠ US L. Assume a shift of one to two letters smaller.
  • Uniqlo and Muji use JP scale even on non-JP sites — read the cm chart.
  • Buying jeans by Japanese waist inches: they typically run 1 inch small.
