Body Measurements vs Garment Measurements

2 min read · Updated October 27, 2026

A size chart may describe your body or the finished garment. Learn the difference before comparing chest, waist and hip numbers.

Body charts describe the intended wearer

Body measurements are taken around your body, without treating the clothing you are wearing as part of the measurement. A body chart tells you which measurement range a size is intended to suit. It does not mean the finished garment will have exactly that circumference.

Garment charts describe the product

UNIQLO distinguishes body measurements from finished-product measurements. A garment chart can list flat widths, length, shoulder width or inseam. These dimensions describe the item, including its design choices. A shirt’s body width may be measured across it when laid flat, not all the way around.

Ease connects the two

Room between a body and a garment depends on fabric, construction and intended silhouette. A non-stretch shirt usually needs room for movement, while a stretch base layer may be designed closer to the body. Do not subtract a fixed amount from every chart; compare a similar garment you already like.

Do not mix incompatible numbers

A 52 cm flat chest width is not a 52 cm body chest circumference. UNIQLO’s flat-measurement guidance explains multiplying a straight body-width measurement by two when an approximate garment circumference is needed. That conversion does not turn the number into a recommended body measurement or account for stretch.

Before you order

  1. Identify whether the heading says body or product measurements.
  2. Check whether widths are flat or circumferential.
  3. Compare like-for-like measurements.
  4. Use a similar well-fitting garment to assess ease.

Frequently asked questions

Is a 52 cm pit-to-pit shirt for a 104 cm chest?
Not necessarily. Its approximate garment circumference is 104 cm, but the intended body size depends on ease and fabric.
Which chart should I use?
Use body charts with body measurements, and product charts with measurements of a comparable garment.
