Pit-to-Pit Measurements: How to Measure a Shirt

2 min read · Updated October 27, 2026

Pit-to-pit is a flat garment width, not a body circumference. Measure a comparable shirt correctly before using a product chart.

Lay the shirt flat

Use a firm flat surface and smooth the garment without stretching it. Fasten it as appropriate so front and back sit naturally. Measure across the chest at the underarm points identified by the seller. Do not pull the fabric wider to reach a preferred number.

Record a width, not a circumference

UNIQLO describes body width across the chest and explains doubling it to estimate garment circumference. A 50 cm flat width gives approximately 100 cm around the garment. The body it fits depends on ease, material and cut; it is not automatically a 100 cm body-chart entry.

Compare the same kind of garment

A stretchy tee and a structured woven shirt can have different measurements while both fitting comfortably. Compare a product to something similar in fabric and shape. Oversized shoulders and dropped armholes can also alter where a pit-to-pit measurement sits.

Read the seller’s tolerance

Measurement locations and production tolerances differ. UNIQLO notes that finished dimensions can vary with product and fabric. A small difference is not necessarily a different size, but do not dismiss a meaningful mismatch in a critical dimension. Ask the seller for the exact method when the chart is unclear.

Frequently asked questions

Do I double pit-to-pit?
Double a straight flat width when you need approximate garment circumference; do not double it when the chart itself lists flat widths.
Can I measure while wearing the shirt?
For a flat product chart, remove it and lay it flat. Body charts use a different method.
