Bra Band Conversion Is Not the Same as Measuring a Band

2 min read · Updated October 27, 2026

Converting an existing bra label and estimating a new size from under-bust measurements are different tasks. Keep the methods separate.

A label conversion starts with a fitted size

If a particular bra already fits, a manufacturer’s international conversion chart can translate its label to another market’s system. That does not involve remeasuring your under-bust or assuming the band number is a literal tape measurement. Use the matching band and cup chart together.

A fitting estimate starts with your body

Wacoal’s b.tempt’d calculator asks for snug measurements around the band area and fullest bust, following its own instructions. Other brands may apply different fitting methods. The result is an initial size to try, not a universal outcome from a pair of numbers.

Do not blend two methods

Rounding measured inches directly to an even US band while also rounding under-bust centimeters to an EU label can yield labels that are not equivalent on a conversion chart. Choose one fitting convention, estimate within that system, then use a matching label-conversion table if needed. Explain the convention rather than calling the result exact.

Cup increments also differ

US and UK cup sequences are not identical above D, and European measurement ranges need not use the same increments as an inch-based method. Do not apply one difference-to-cup formula to every market. A brand fitter or current chart is especially useful when measurements and tried-on fit disagree.

Before you order

  1. Decide whether you are converting a known label or estimating a new fit.
  2. Use a single manufacturer’s measuring instructions.
  3. Read band and cup together.
  4. Treat the first result as a size to try and check comfort.

Frequently asked questions

Is a US band number my literal under-bust measurement?
Not necessarily. Band labels and fitting conventions vary.
Can two calculators give different sizes?
Yes. They may use different band methods, cup sequences or measurement inputs; check the method and actual fit.
