1. Know your foot in millimeters

Skip your habitual size. Measure your longer foot in millimeters (see the how-to-measure guide). This number is the only one that carries meaning across brands.

2. Find the brand's actual size chart

Not a generic conversion chart — the specific brand's page for that specific model. Nike, Adidas and New Balance all publish per-model charts because their lasts differ across performance and lifestyle lines.

3. Read three recent reviews

Filter to reviews from the last 12 months. Skim for the phrases 'runs large', 'runs small', 'true to size', 'narrow', 'wide'. If two out of three reviews agree, take the signal — a shoe that runs half a size large is a stable trait, not a random opinion.

4. Check the return policy

Free returns turn buying two sizes and returning one into a legitimate strategy. Without them, factor a 15% risk into the price. If the retailer charges return shipping and a restocking fee, only buy sizes you're 90% confident in.

5. Order at the end of the day

Trivial, but real. Late-day feet are up to 5% larger than morning feet. Making the buying decision when your foot is at its 'normal' evening size prevents you from optimistically undersizing.
