Running Shoe Sizing Is Different
2 min read · Updated July 5, 2026
The 'go half a size up in running shoes' advice is real — but it's often misapplied. It exists because feet expand during runs, not because running shoes are cut small.
Why the half-size rule exists
During a 10km run, feet swell 3-5% and slide forward slightly on descents. A shoe that fits perfectly at rest will bruise the toenails after an hour. The half-size headroom accommodates the swell.
When to apply it
- Long-distance road running (10km+).
- Trail running, especially with technical descents.
- Marathon and ultra training.
When to skip it
- Short runs (under 5km) — normal size is fine.
- Track spikes — snug fit is intentional.
- Racing flats for 5-10km — some runners prefer true-to-size for feel.
The thumb check
Stand up in the shoe, laces tied. There should be about a thumb's width (12-15 mm) between your longest toe and the front. Less than that and downhill running will hurt.
Width matters more than length
A too-narrow running shoe causes more injury than a too-short one. If a brand's standard width pinches, get the Wide (2E/4E) rather than sizing up in length.

Frequently asked questions
- Do all runners need to size up?
- No. Short-distance runners often fit true. It's the long-run swell that necessitates the extra room.
- Should I buy trail shoes larger than road shoes?
- Same size as your road shoes for most trail running. Only ultra distances (50km+) benefit from a full size up.
