Shirt Sleeve Measurements: Shoulder vs Center Back
2 min read · Updated October 27, 2026
Sleeve lengths can start at the shoulder or the center back. Identify the method before comparing a shirt to a size chart.
Two starting points give different numbers
A shoulder-to-cuff measurement covers the sleeve itself. A center-back measurement includes the distance from the center of the neckline across the shoulder before running down the arm. UNIQLO’s measurement guidance explicitly identifies sleeve length from the center back for relevant garments.
Follow the diagram rather than the heading alone
A chart saying sleeve length without an illustration may leave the method ambiguous. Ask the retailer which points are used. Comparing a center-back measurement to a shoulder-seam measurement can make a correctly sized shirt look much too long.
Shoulder construction changes the comparison
Dropped shoulders and raglan sleeves do not use the same shoulder seam arrangement as a fitted dress shirt. Choose a comparable reference garment, and read the intended silhouette. A low seam may be part of an oversized design rather than evidence that the entire shirt is too big.
Check cuff position and movement
Try the shirt with arms relaxed and then reach forward. Compare how cuffs sit and whether fabric pulls across the back. Sleeve length is only one part of fit; shoulder width and chest room also influence comfort.
Before you order
- Identify the chart’s sleeve starting point.
- Use a reference garment with similar shoulder construction.
- Measure along the instructed path.
- Compare chest, shoulder and body length too.

Frequently asked questions
- Is center-back sleeve length longer?
- It includes shoulder distance, so it is not directly comparable to sleeve-only length.
- Can oversized shirts have long sleeve measurements by design?
- Yes. Evaluate the intended silhouette and cuff position rather than the number alone.
