US Clothing Sizes Explained

US clothing sizes look like measurements but aren't. A US 8 in 1990 is a US 4 today, and that drift is why every American shopper feels 'small' in European brands.
How US sizing is supposed to work
The nominal system for US women's is even numbers 0 to 20, based on bust, waist and hip measurements set by an ASTM standard. Men's uses chest inches (36, 38, 40) for shirts and jackets, and waist × inseam for trousers (32×32). Letter sizing (XS/S/M/L/XL) is a coarser overlay — one letter typically spans two numeric sizes.

Vanity sizing, in one paragraph
Between 1958 and today, the body measurements of a US size 8 have grown by roughly 4 inches at the bust. The label stayed; the garment got bigger. Every brand does this at its own pace, so a size 8 at Gap is not a size 8 at J.Crew is not a size 8 at Ann Taylor. The number is functionally a suggestion.

Most US shoppers find they need to size up one notch in EU brands. That's not because the EU brand runs small — it's because the US brand has drifted large.
Men's is more stable
Men's US sizing is anchored to real measurements — a 32 waist is (mostly) 32 inches — because men's trousers are historically sold with alteration in mind. Drift exists (a 'relaxed' 32 today is closer to a 34 of a decade ago) but it's smaller than in women's.

- Petite (P) sizes use the same numbers but scale down length — sleeves, torso, inseam — while keeping bust, waist and hip the same as the standard size.
