Italian sizing looks larger than it is. An Italian 42 dress is a US 6, not a US 12. The system just starts counting from a higher base.

The +2 rule

For women's clothing, Italian sizes sit exactly 2 above the general EU number. IT 40 = EU 38 = US 4. IT 44 = EU 42 = US 10. Memorize the offset and every Italian size becomes readable.

Men's is different

Italian men's suits use the drop system — jacket chest in cm divided by 2. IT 50 = 100 cm chest = US 40. Same as general EU men's; no offset.

Shoes: standard EU with a twist

Italian shoe sizes match standard EU sizing, but Italian brands (especially Gucci, Ferragamo, Prada) run notably narrow. Wide-footed shoppers should size up half a size in Italian luxury shoes.

Fit reputation

Italian brands cut for a slimmer body model than US brands. Even after converting the number, expect a snugger fit through the chest, waist and hips. When in doubt, size up one notch above the pure numeric conversion.
